Since Ancient times man has created clay vessels.  Inspired by early southwester potters, Ed uses a similar primitive coil-built method to construct his vessels.  Like those ancient artisans, his vessels are also pit-fired.  A large pit is dug in the ground and often lined with the broken shards of old pottery.  The air dried pots are then lain in the pit and covered with organic materials.  A fire is then built over that.  This process of firing is lengthy and often uncertain.  Each vessel that emerges from the fire is a unique success!  The unusual colors and encrustations are caused by the minerals in the local water is mixed with the clay and are unique to Ed’s pottery.  Ed lives in Kingman ,Arizona a land rich in turquoise and other copper based minerals.  This causes the beautiful green hues.
Ed teaches ceramics at Kingman Community College, where his students learn this ancient method of firing.
