Raku Rattles
Hearts and Pillows $24
Raku originated in Japan in the 16th century and was used to created ceramics for tea ceremonies. The process has enjoyed a renassiance in the United States. Western raku is typically made from a stoneware clay body and are bisque fired then glaze fired. The process is known for creating spectacular "flash" coloring achieved by placing the piece, red hot from the kiln, in the reduction chamber filled with combustible materials causing oxidation and thus the coloring.
John incorproates this process to create his unique embossed ceramic rattles and vases.
Living in far west Texas has had a profound effect on John Davis' pottery. The rugged beauty and history of the Big Bend region helped inspire John's Raku line. Inspiration comes from both the mountainous beauty, and the rich history associated with the area.
Gifted Hands is proud to have represented John for over 20 years exclusively in Sedona.
