William K. Turner received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida, where he specialized in raku
and salt-glaze firing. He specializes in simple forms and consistency
in glazes. His sponge and grass effects are distinctive to his work.
William is a master Raku artist.
While raku has enjoyed a renaissance in the American Craft market the
technique was developed in the 1500's by Japanese Zen Buddhist monks for use in tea ceremonies. The process has changed little, the bisque fired pot is glazed and placed into kiln. The entire vessel glows like red-hot coal, and the glaze melts into a sheet of liquid glass. At this point the glowing pot is removed from the kiln hot and placed to an airtight container filled with sawdust or leaves. The sudden reduction causes the patterns in the glaze. This process can never be repeated exactly so each piece is unique.
Gifted Hands is proud to represent William Turner exclusively in Sedona.
